Arriving in Northern Ireland

Going to northern Ireland is something I was looking forward to during this trip. Something that first surprised me when we started traveling there, was that we would not need to show our passports when crossing the border and or even be stopped by border control. I was told that when the country of Ireland split into the republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, they decided to keep a soft border. This surprised me because I am so used to having to do a lot when traveling from country to country, but this showed me the commitment that the two countries had to try and stay civilized and as one, even though they are ruled differently. The drive to northern Ireland was very scenic. There were rolling green hills with many livestock covering large plots of land. One of our stops once we entered northern Ireland was dunluce castle. The castle’s remains sit on the edge of a cliff, overlooking the water. This castle was built in medieval times and has a lot of history to it. Getting to see the original layout of the castle and what this would have looked like in the time when people lived in it was very interesting. Our next stop was the giant's causeway, which was also spectacular. Being able to climb and walk across the basalt column, formed by volcanic eruptions, was fun and exciting. Getting to sit on the column and listen to the ocean was one of my favorite parts. Also the beautiful secret surrounding the causeway, was also one of the best parts. Then from here we went to our home for the weekend, Portrush. Portrush is a cute and quaint seaside town in Northern Ireland. This town was very cute and had great views and beaches on the water. While there we had some great food and even ran into the freezing cold water. I think town would be very fun for a relaxing holiday and or vacation. I enjoyed my first day traveling to Northern Ireland and am excited to visit Belfast!
